S is for Salaam

Before I introduce my poems I want to let my new readers (and old ones if you forgot) Salaam means peace. A greeting Muslims exchange. Islam means peace and submission.

Here are some poems that may or may not be inspired by poetic asides and faith, and may or may not start with the letter S:

Kiss and Salaam

As a child I go to sleep
with a kiss from my parents
As a teen I go to sleep
with salaams from my parents

At both times
without that kiss or salaam
I can't sleep, I wait to get it

It's like having to say
I love you
before leaving a person
cuz you don't know
what's going to happen next.

Complex

Complex is something you make of something
when it doesn't need to be
don't think too much, just do it

Don't do it to making yourself blind with it
but do it with a deep love.

Islam

Islam on my mind
School out of sight but shouldn't be

Islam should be consuming,
in a way that it helps you
that is what Islam is about.

I love that first one about kisses and salaam. I always make sure my little guy gets a kiss before he goes to sleep at night.

I still make my 12 yr old give me hugs before he goes to bed--even though he's almost the same size as me. I don't think he's ever going to get away from that, no matter how big he grows. Well, I guess he'll move away one day...

I really relate to your "Complex" poem. I'm great at making things complex that don't need to be.Simply Sarah

Publishers That Publish Poetry Books

Hello Poetteers, As I was doing my own research for poetry publishers this question popped up on my feed: Does anyone know any publishers that publish poetry books? Later on, while hosting #PoetteerChat I asked what everyone’s plan is for a year from now. Most of you said to be published. I promised a list of publishers, so here’s the top 7 I found. Along with the publisher, I will mention the poets they represent. I want to work with someone I can trust. Seeing familiar names makes them more trustable in my opinion. Andrew McMeel - has published Amanda Lovelace, Lang Leav, Rupi Kaur and more.  Dancing Girl Press - has published our very own Amanda N. Butler.  Bottlecap Press - has published Courtney LeBlanc  Button Poetry - has published Olivia Gatwood, Sierra DeMulder and more.  Two Sylvias Press - has published Jeannine Hall Gailey, Kelli Russell Agodon, Martha Silano and more.  Write Bloody - has published Sarah Kay, Andrea Gibson and mo...
